Four world conferences on women’s issues have been organised under the auspices of the United Nations. The 3rd International World Women’s Conference held in Nairobi in 1985 forms the pivot of this book. This meeting recommended practical and effective steps for global action to promote equality, development and peace for women. It was a landmark meeting for women the first of its kind in Africa, and it led to the adoption of the Nairobi Forward Looking Strategies (NFLS) for the advancement of women for the period up to the year 2000.
