Each year thousands of women and girls fall victim to threats, violence and oppression in close relationships, and in the name of honour. Very few victims report domestic violence to authorities or seek help, in many cases due to a lack of knowledge about Swedish society and its laws. "Al-Makhraj" contains information in Arabic for women and girls who are victims of violence. It covers the issue of violence and abuse within close relationships, honour-related violence, and women’s rights in Swedish society. Prepared in cooperation with the County Administration of Stockholm, it is intended primarily for Arabic speaking women and girls at the Stina women’s shelter in Järfälla Municipality, Stockholm County. The document gives a quick overview of the following areas of focus: 1) Human rights; the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Human Rights of Women; the Penal Code; the Parents Code; Social Services Act; the Aliens Act, etc. 2) Police reports; Divorce; Legal proceedings; Custody; Division of property; Compensation. 3) Where to turn for help and support, e.g. Women’s shelter, Social Services, Youth Emergency Shelters & Family centres; 4) The mechanisms in the cycle of violence; Honour-related violence; and 5) Protection measures, Checklists, practical tips and helplines.
